What is a Magnet?
A
magnet is a piece of metal, ore or stone that has the power to attract or
repel certain materials. Magnets occur naturally in the ground. Lodestone,
which has been mined for centuries, is a magnetic stone made of iron ore.
Today, magnets are made of different substances and are found in a range
of shapes. The most common shapes are bar, horseshoe, button and ring. Magnets
come in different sizes and strengths.
If you hold a magnet near a refrigerator door, you can feel it being pulled
towards the door. This is attraction. If you let go the magnet sticks
to the door. You cannot see how magnets work but you can have lots of fun
using them.
